**FIRST announced at the beginning of the 2022-2023 season that it was ending the Global Innovation Competition.
We are sad to see it go as our team has had some incredible opportunities through GIA,
but we can't wait to see what FIRST comes up with next to inspire innovation!

SECOND Place at the Global Innovation competition...TWICE!
2017-2018 Hydrodynamics |
2020-2021 Replay |
In the Hydrodynamics 2017-2018 Season, Lego Legion received a nomination from Ohio to the Global Innovation Award competition. We worked really hard to finish all the requirements on time, and it stretched us to think like entrepreneurs! We got the fateful email in April (just before Worlds) that we were chosen as one of 20 semi-finalists, and we would be heading to California at the end of June!

Despite complete team turnover from the previous GIA team AND an entirely remote season, Lego Legion received an Ohio nomination to submit for the Global Innovation competition again at our State tournament. With a pandemic raging, it was difficult to connect with professionals, but we used technology to our advantage, and we were THRILLED to learn in April that Lego Legion was invited to GIA once again!

All six team members headed to San Francisco in late June 2018 to participate in a week celebrating innovation...
FIRST Lego League style! We got to interact with teams from all over the world, and professionals from a variety of industries, representatives from the US Patent Office, and leaders of FIRST and LEGO. We participated in workshops about business strategies and creative thinking, played "Who Wants to Be an Innovator," watched all the teams' presentations, and met with Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Woo for help with how to develop our UVeggie. Noelle was even selected to be on the kid panel at the awards ceremony! Best of all, the UVeggie was the second place winner of the global competition, and was recognized as the highest placing team in the United States! We shared the runners-up award with Israeli team D++, placing second to Team Fsingenium from Spain. We were so proud and honored to represent Cincinnati, Ohio, and the US at this elite competition. And best of all, we've kept in touch with D++, continuing to cheer for each other from across the globe. |
Our team of five took the Champion's Award at our state tournament, but because World Festival was canceled, our season was over in February... until we got our Global Innovation semi-finalist letter! The team was thrilled to have the opportunity to experience the learning the former team did. We pressed on with SmartSteps, and created pitch videos and written submissions.
The actual event was online and the team moved in to our coach's house, setting up tech stations for judging and viewing all over the house. Because we couldn't travel, we made if fun with evening adventures like doing a high ropes course, water fights, and go-carting. The team moms pitched in and we feasted on pancakes, sandwiches, and snacks. We were thrilled to be asked back to participate, and we couldn't believe that once again, Lego Legion's Innovation Project was the second place winner of the global competition, and was recognized as the highest placing team in the United States! The SmartSteps team was so happy to be able to share such an incredible award with the UVeggie team, and we are honored to be Innovation Ambassadors for FIRST! |
